Reserve now for NPC Awards Dinner honoring journalism’s finest, Aug. 6

The National Press Club will honor the nation's best journalism and recognize the courageous work of journalists who report despite extraordinary hardship at an awards dinner Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The John Aubuchon Press Freedom Awards will honor journalist Zeynep Kuray of Turkey, and the anonymous "whistleblowers" who expose wrongdoing at their own peril.

Kuray, a Turkish reporter who writes for a daily newspaper and a news agency in Istanbul, is known for writing about controversial issues, including the conflict between Turkey's government and its Kurdish minority. She was arrested and dozens of her colleagues were arrested in December 2011 for allegedly working as "propagandists" for an outlawed Kurdish political organization. Human rights groups accuse Turkish authorities for using the arrests to crack down on Kurdish dissent.

The Club's award to "whistleblowers' highlights how people who speak to the media have come under siege by the government. Recently, the government secretly subpoenaed Associated Press reporters’ phone records and named a Fox News reporter a “co-conspirator” in an investigation into information leaks.

The Press Club’s journalism awards dinner will also recognize the quality work of many journalists including those at SCOTUSblog for their coverage of the Supreme Court’s ruling on health care, Time magazine’s Michael Scherer for his close examination of the Obama campaign’s use of technology in its search for donors and voters and PBS’ Frontline and the Center for Public Integrity for their story “Dollars and Dentists,” which looks at the profit motive in dental care for seniors using Medicaid.

The winners will be honored at the awards dinner Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the National Press Club. Reception begins at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. Click here to reserve tickets.
