Remembering Herbert Hoover: Snippet of Press Club history

Herbert Hoover was a dues-paying National Press Club member for decades, far longer than any of the other U. S. presidents who have belonged, many of them as honorary members. Hoover joined in 1921, eight years before he entered the White House, and was a frequent Club speaker. His last such appearance, in 1954, 21 years after he left the presidency, drew a luncheon audience of almost 500 people.

This Club history snippet was one of the many put together by Art Wiese, who served as Club president in 1979 and played a leading role in rthe Club's renovation in the early 1980s. In honor of his passing last year, the Wire is running one of them each week, and next week's will be the last.

We welcome your ideas on unusual, amusing, controversial or otherwise special Club events that we could use to create new snippets.
