Prepare for census releases on income, insurance coverage, 9:30 am Sept. 7

The U.S. Census Bureau will release a host of new data on the nation’s poverty, income and health insurance coverage throughout September.

Get prepared with a special Data Diving session on Friday, Sept. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Zenger Room with representatives from the Bureau who will explain how the agency collects, tabulates and organizes the data used for its findings.

The class is free for National Press Club members and $10 for non-members. Register here. Members must login to view the code for free registration.

The class will walk you through the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey and American Community Survey to demonstrate how to find what you need for your reporting. You will learn to dig through the data for in-depth stories or for local angles.

The bureau’s community survey produces estimates for numerous social, economic and housing characteristics, such as language, education, the commute to work, employment, mortgage status and rent.

The new findings will not be announced at the event. The class is a general overview of the two surveys -- and the data that will be collected -- before they are released later in the month.

The session is sponsored by the NPC Journalism Institute’s Professional Development Committee.
