National Press Club journalism contest recognizes photo excellence

The National Press Club’s journalism contest will present awards for excellence in news photography for the first time this year.

The contest will recognize excellence for an individual news photo and for a news picture story (with a maximum of nine photos). The contest is limited to photos taken during 2012. The photo awards are intended to honor professional photojournalists who have produced outstanding work, either independently for news organizations or as employees of those news organizations. Non-traditional entrants are free to explain in supporting materials how they meet these journalistic criteria.

The winner in each category will win a one-year free National Press Club membership.

Other awards in the contest include Breaking news (broadcast and print); consumer journalism (newspapers, periodicals and broadcast); Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism; Washington regional reporting; newsletter journalism; Joan M. Friedenberg Online Journalism Award; Michael Dornheim Award (for coverage of defense, aerospace or the airline industry); Lee Walczak Award for Political Analysis; Ann Cottrell Free Animal Reporting Award; Angele Gingras Humor Award; Joseph D. Ryle Award for Excellence in Writing on the Problems of Geriatrics; Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence (for coverage of diplomatic and foreign policy issues) and the Sandy Hume Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Journalism (for reporters 34 years old and younger).
