Latest Herblock Prize cartoons displayed in Reliable Source

A day after receiving the Herblock Prize for excellence in editorial cartooning, Ward Sutton visited the National Press Club, where four examples from his winning portfolio will be on display through the coming year in the Reliable Source restaurant.

The Herb Block Foundation created the Herblock Prize in 2004 to encourage editorial cartooning as an essential tool for preserving the rights of the American people through freedom of speech and the right of expression. Its namesake, Herb Block, a four-time Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist who worked at The Washington Post for 55 years until his death in 2001.

Among the panels on display is Sutton’s personal favorite “Trumpflakes.” The cartoon turns the tables on Trump supporters who deride liberals as ‘snowflakes.’

Club President Andrea Edney hosted a small luncheon Thursday to honor the winner and show off Sutton’s winning work that appeared in The Boston Globe in 2017.

Luncheon guests included Herb Block Foundation President Marcela Brane and Executive Director Sarah Armstrong Alex, past winner Matt Wuerker of Politico and Michael Cavna of The Washington Post.

Born in Minnesota, Sutton got his start cartooning for the Edina Sun community newspaper when he was in middle school. After college, he launched his first professional strip, “Ward’s Cleaver,” in the Minneapolis alt-weekly, the Twin Cities Reader.

Since then, he has worked as a freelancer drawing for dozens of clients that include The New Yorker, Village Voice and Rolling Stone.

The National Press Club began displaying Herblock Prize cartoons in the Reliable Source in 2013.
