Effective Messaging from a Network TV Anchor’s Perspective

Thalia Assuras has anchored TV newscasts at CBS and ABC, plus at CTV and Global TV in Canada. At the next Communicators Breakfast, she will provide her perspective on why it’s important for interview subjects to be prepared with effective messaging to tell their stories and get their point across, whether on TV or in other media.

When Assuras made the transition from broadcast journalist to communications consultant, her media training sessions with corporate executives, university leaders, diplomats and others left her stunned. Misconceptions and a lack of understanding about media, and sometimes even fear of journalists, made it more difficult for many of these news sources to deliver their messages.
Assuras imparts to her clients the importance of storytelling and preparing strong, effective messages that resonate with audiences, no matter which media platform is used. She helps them become comfortable with media and journalists as the vehicles for those messages.
An award-winning journalist, Assuras covered many of the most important stories of our time as an anchor, co-anchor and national correspondent for CBS News, including congressional and presidential elections, the September 11th terrorist attacks, the shootings at Virginia Tech, and the war in Iraq.
She previously was the anchor for ABC Morning News and World News Now; Canada AM and CTV Weekend Evening News; and broadcasts and special events for Global CanWest Television.
Today, Assuras has a media consultant practice that is based in Washington. She also is a founding member of The Next Generation Initiative, a leadership program aimed at getting students involved in public affairs.
