Education Secretary to Speak at Club Sept. 30

On the heels of a four-state bus tour, Education Secretary Arne Duncan will speak at a the Club at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30. While the event will follow the Speakers luncheon format, no meal will be served.

Duncan has been making the case for providing preschool education for all 4-year-olds and for a new higher education agenda, including a ratings system for colleges' affordability and value.

He has been an advocate for the Common Core State Standards initiative, a state-led effort to set nationwide educational goals for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Most states have signed on and the business community has been supportive, but the proposal has run into opposition from some conservatives who object to what they say is a greater federal role in education.
