Club members Amanpour, Van Susteren make ‘Most Powerful Women’ list

National Press Club members Christiane Amanpour and Greta Van Susteren are featured in Forbes Magazine’s 2011 list of “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” Amanpour is ranked number 44 and Van Susteren is number 75.

The Forbes list is comprised of the most influential politicians, media figures, chief excutive officers, cultural icons and entrepreneurs around the globe. Topping the list is German Chancellor Angela Merkel, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

"I am flattered but I am also smart enough to know that I would not be on this list if it were not for the platform Fox News Channel gives me each night and for the very hard work of the 'On The Record' staff,” Van Susteren told the Wire.

Van Susteren's ranking was for both the Fox News Channel show and her blog, “Greta Wire,” according to the “Forbes” article.

“As the only primetime cable news program anchored in Washington, D.C., Van Susteren has unrivaled access to politicians on Capitol Hill," the article states.
"The host of FOX News Channel's 'On the Record' boasts the highest cable news ratings in [her] time slot and a rabidly loyal pack of supporters. Her posts on [the] blog 'Greta Wire' regularly receive hundreds -- often thousands -- of comments. She has over 80,000 Twitter followers and 44,000 Facebook fans.”

Amanpour, the Club's Fourth Estate winner in 2008, is credited by “Forbes” with leading ABC’s Sunday morning political show “This Week” to number one.

“With Christiane Amanpour as host since August 2010, ABC's Sunday morning political show 'This Week' has become the No. 1 public affairs program on TV, drawing nearly 2.2 million U.S. viewers each week, plus airing in more than 200 countries via BBC World. It will likely grow stronger... Amanpour, known for her fierce intellect and courageous on-the-ground international coverage, was the go-to source for reporting on [the] Arab spring, landing exclusive interviews with former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi,” states the article.
