Former ethics chief to speak at Club Friday

The former head of the Office of Government Ethics will speak at a Headliners Newsmaker on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Lisagor Room.

Walter M. Shaub, Jr. recently left his position before his five-year term expired to work on ethics issues at the , who served until July 19 as the director of the Campaign Legal Center, headed by Trevor Potter, former legal counsel to several Republican presidential candidates and a former chairman of the Federal Election Commission.

Club to celebrate outstanding journalism on Friday

Tickets are still available for the National Press Club's annual journalism awards dinner on Friday.

Outstanding reporting will be recognized in such categories as politics, consumer issues, online journalism and aviation. The evening starts with a reception at 6 p.m. and then dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online.

Journalists and the people they cover to discuss civility Aug. 4

Reporters, press secretaries and outside observers will convene at the Club on Friday, Aug. 4, to discuss ways of improving the discourse on Capitol Hill.

The event, sponsored by the National Press Club's Journalism Institute, will take place from 9:30 -11:30 a.m. in the First Amendment Lounge. Admission is free but reservations are required and can be made online.

Some of the best journalistic work in reporting on consumer issues, politics and breaking news will be recognized at the Club's annual awards dinner on Friday.

The winners of the Club’s journalism contests will be honored at a reception in the Holeman Lounge beginning at 6 p.m. and a dinner to follow at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom.

Among the other categories are young journalists, newsletter journalism, media criticism, online techniques in storytelling and coverage of animal rights, aviation issues, the elderly and foreign affairs.

Lions of the Club lost: NPC mourns former presidents Don Larrabee and Dave Hess

The National Press Club lost two of its former presidents within a day: Donald R. Larrabee, president in 1973, died July 18 at the Sunrise on Connecticut home in Washington; and David Hess, president in 1985, died July 19 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
