Massey Energy CEO at July 22 Luncheon

Don L. Blankenship, the chairman and chief executive officer of Massey Energy Co., will speak at a Luncheon on Thursday, July 22, on the need to increase surface mining of coal to meet the nation’s energy requirements.

Massey Energy is the fourth-largest coal company in the United States. An explosion at the company’s Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, W.Va., on April 5 killed 29 miners, making it the deadliest coal mine explosion in the United States in 40 years.

Over the past year, you have seen all of the great activities that take place at the Club, but none is more central to its continued existence than the classes and training and panels conducted by our 501-c3, the Eric Friedhiem National Journalism Library.

Without these activities, the Club could not fulfill its mission as the world's leading professional organization for journalists.

Presidential Makeup Artist Interview, 6:30 pm Oct. 7

Makeup artist Lillian Brown, who applied makeup to John Kennedy and Richard Nixon before the first televised presidential debate in 1960, will be interviewed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in the broadcast studios on the fourth floor.

Brown will discuss the nine U.S. presidents she worked with during her career.

NYT Energy Reporter Talks to Young Members, 7 pm July 1

Matthew Wald, the long-time energy and transportation reporter for the New York Times, will speak to young members at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 1, as part of the Cocktails with Champions series. The event is open to members under age 35. RSVP to Evan Sweetman evsweetman@gmail.com

Wald has worked at the Times since 1976. During that time he has developed a reputation for clear writing on complicated topics including the nuclear industry and the ins and outs of what makes airplanes work – or, in the case of accidents, not work.

Intro to Media Training, 2-4 pm Dec 4; Free for Members

NPC member Adam Konowe will conduct "Introduction to Media Training" from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4.

The class is designed to empower public relations practitioners and spokespeople to build happy long-term relationships with the journalists who cover their organizations.

It will offer young professionals, students on others seeking to polish their skills a primer on where media is today and how news happens. Participants will also get tips on how to field inquiries from journalists, interview successfully, and maintain proper attribution and confidentiality.
