"Generating Alpha in India: Opportunities and Challenges"

Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 6:00 PM
National Press Club, Washington, D.C.

India is expected to be the 3rd largest economy in the world by 2030. Demographic dividend, policy reform, and domestic consumption provide tailwinds for growth, creating a unique opportunity for investors to benefit from a high-growth, large, and democratic economy. India is at a critical juncture in its growth journey due to recent currency depreciation, domestic credit conditions, and upcoming elections in 2019. What strategies can investors deploy to navigate the volatility while benefiting from India’s growth story? What asset classes and sectors provide attractive opportunities for investors to generate alpha?

Mr. Gandhi has been a part of the Indian financial markets since India’s deregulation in early 90’s. He has an insightful perspective on India, through his Indian financial markets background and his knowledge, experience, and understanding of developed markets. As Head of Strategy and Corporate Development of Lehman Brothers, India, he was responsible for the equities, fixed income, balance-sheet investing, and investment management businesses. More recently, Tapan raised a mid-market private equity fund and invested in consumption related businesses benefitting from growth in per capita income. Sectors covered included health and wellness, apparel, education, media, consumer services, food and beverage, and banking. He is on the Board of Legatax, a leading legal and tax advisory platform in India.
