October 25, 2014 6:00 PM
Location: 4th Estate Room
The Antonovych Foundation presents its Annual Award to Timothy Snyder, the Bird White Housum Professor of History at Yale University, for his scholarly works about the history of modern Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. Among his many works, Professor Snyder in 2010 published a widely acclaimed book entitled Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin, a history of the mass killings in the lands between Berlin and Moscow. The Foundation especially recognizes Professor Snyder’s contributions in actively promoting civil society in Ukraine, with special mention of the organization of the conference on “Thinking Ukraine” that brought together Ukrainian and Western scholars, public intellectuals, and journalists in Kyiv in May 2014.
The Anonovych Foundation was established in 1980 in Washington D.C. by Drs. Tatiana and Omelan Antonovych to promote “the study and appreciation of the culture of Ukraine, including but not limited to Ukrainian literature, history, religion and humanities.” In carrying out the goals of the founders, the Foundation has provided assistance to Universities and Libraries in Ukraine and has endowed a number of scholarships at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv.
Among its other significant activities, the Foundation presents an award to individuals and organizations in recognition of their achievements that further the objectives of the Foundation. This award has been presented almost each year since 1981. Attached is the list of previous recipients. The Board of Directors of the Foundation accepted unanimously the recommendation of its Nominating Committee and is honored to present the 2014 award to Professor Timothy Snyder. The presentation will be held at the National Press Club on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at 6 PM.
