6:30 PM  Caroline Preston (NPC Book Event)
Description: On May 14, the National Press Club joins with the National Endowment for the Arts as part of its program, "The Big Read," an initiative designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. This year, various authors will participate at Big Read sites around the country to read F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, and to showcase books connected to that early 20th-century classic.

The club is partnering with the NEA and Chapters Literary Arts Center to bring author Caroline Preston to its historic Zenger room. Ms. Preston Ms. Preston will speak about The Great Gatsby and Fitzgerald's inspiration for Daisy Buchanan, Ginevra King, accompanied by a slide talk with archival photographs of F. Scott, Zelda, Gatsby's house, and Ginevra. This will especially interest Washingtonians, as Fitzgerald lived for a time in Georgetown. The Fitzgeralds' daughter Frances Scott, known to all as "Scottie," also lived in Georgetown, and in her socially active life she was known as an accomplished journalist.

Author Caroline Preston is the author of two previous novels, Jackie by Josie (a New York Times Notable Book of the Year) and Lucy Crocker 2.0. This event is open to the public and free of charge, however space is extremely limited and reservations are required. RSVP at opus@press.org. Or phone: 202-662-7129. As a fundraiser for the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library, no outside books will be permitted. Thank you for your cooperation.
