January
4 th - NPC President-emeritus John Cosgrove, the legendary Helen Thomas and fellow Fourth Estate winner Jack Germond highlight a panel that will swap yarns and talk about the Press Club and their experiences in journalism. The discussion will follow the premiere showing of the documentary film: "The National Press Club at 100: a Century of Headlines" at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 in the Ballroom. March
28 th - "The Next Century: Journalism for a Digital Globe." This is a joint program of the National Press Club and the Missouri School of Journalism, both of which celebrate their centennials this year. Both events will take place in the Holeman Lounge.
Session I: 9:30-11 a.m. Speakers for the symposium include: Karl Erik Gustafsson of Sweden, a professor of mass media economics; Liss Jeffrey of Canada, an expert in media literacy; Vincent Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah of Ghana, host of an innovative radio program; Alan Rusbridger of the United Kingdom, editor of The Guardian newspaper. They will all present case studies that detail media innovations and successes. The symposium will be moderated by Geneva Overholser, of the Missouri School of Journalism and past editor of the Des Moines Register and ombudsman at the Washington Post.
Session II: 12:30-2 p.m. Neil F. Budde will be the luncheon speaker, Budde was most recently president and editor in chief of Yahoo! News. Before that he served as founding editor and publisher of The Wall Street Journal Online. He is on the board of the Online News Association and has served as Treasurer since January 2007. 31 st - Don Ritchie, Associate Senate Historian, will address a Luncheon as a kick-off to the National Press Club birthday celebration. The luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. in the Holeman Lounge and Mr. Ritchie's remarks begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a question and answer session. - NPC Memorabilia Sale, 2pm. Immediately following the luncheon all the National Press Club Centennial materials including the book, DVD, medallion, lapel pin, Centennial Coffee Mug, calendar and other items will be on sale in the NPC Lobby. Contact Joann Booze for details at 202-662-7532.
- Documentary Film on WETA (PBS). "The National Press Club at 100: A Century of Headlines" an hour-long documentary film, will have its television premiere in Washington, Maryland, Virginia and parts of West Virginia. The film looks at the role of the Press Club in the development of journalism as a profession and shows how changes in society at large impacted and were reflected in this institution. Footage of Bob Woodward, Walter Cronkite, Helen Thomas, David Broder and others reveals many facets of journalism as a profession and the development of journalism over time. There will be an informal "watch party" for members in the Club's Reliable Source bar.
April
1 st - Open House at the NPC Library. An opportunity to visit and tour the Eric Friedheim Library at the National Press Club. There will be coffee in the morning in the reading room and tea and cookies in the afternoon. Gil Klein, author of a book on the history of the National Press Club, will be on hand with books to purchase or sign or to chat with visitors.
2 nd - Open House at the NPC Gym. Members can come get a tour of the fitness center and ask questions relating to fitness training. Fitness Director, Terry Davis, will review the equipment and provide demonstrations on its proper use. Information will also be available regarding our partnership with the Washington Sports Club.
- Starting at noon, members who buy lunch at the Club's Reliable Source Restaurant will be surprised to find that their first drink will be at 1908 prices today! We have consulted our archives for authentic details and research on this one.
3 rd - Open House at the NPC Archives. (All afternoon) At the Archives you will marvel at 100 years of Press Club history - in photos, letters, books and other media.
4 th - News Conference with Mayor Adrian Fenty of Washington, D.C., and National Press Club President Sylvia Smith. Mayor Fenty will make a special announcement related to the Press Club, and both Fenty and Smith will take questions from the press.
- National Press Club Owls Centennial History Reception from 4pm - 5:30pm in the Archives Center. Invitation only. For information, contact Marlene Justen at mjustsen@press.org or Lisa Miller at lmiller@press.org.
- NPC Pre-Birthday Celebration, 7pm. A special event especially for young members who can enjoy a birthday cake celebration for their Club in the Conference Rooms followed by a screening of the NPC documentary film, "The National Press Club at 100: A Century of Headlines."
5 th - NPC Gala, 7:30pm. A great night of celebration with food, drink, memories and dancing. Two bands will perform, including the famous big band sound of Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra and Trio Caliente, a Brazilian sound experience. Several hundred people are expected to this black-tie optional event, including community leaders and celebrities as well as many journalists. 22 nd - The National Press Club will host the dedication ceremony of five "American Journalists" stamps honoring Martha Gellhorn, John Hersey, George Polk, Ruben Salazar and Eric Sevareid on April 22 at 11 a.m. in the Holeman Lounge as part of the year long celebration of the Press Club’s 100th anniversary.
May - December
C entennial Forum - For the first time, the National Press Club, the world’s leading professional organization for journalists, is taking its programs across the nation to help promote the First Amendment and freedom of the press and to look at where the journalism profession is heading.
