Rep. John Dingell, the Michigan Democrat who holds the record as the longest-serving U.S. House member ever, gave a speech on "When Congress Worked" at a National Press Club luncheon on June 27, 2014.

Dingell announced he will retire at the end of his current term, having been a member of the U.S. House for 58 years, serving alongside 11 presidents. He served as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and helped pass legislation including Medicare, the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act.
