President Jacob Zuma of South Africa addressed a National Press Club Speakers Luncheon on August 4, 2014. Zuma, who was first elected president in 2009 and re-elected in 2014, spoke on the eve of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington. His appearance at the NPC coincided with the approaching 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela speaking at the Club on Oct. 7, 1994 following his election as the first president of South Africa elected through a fully representative democratic process involving all segments of the country’s society.
