Senator Charles Schumer and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich debated their policy priorities at an event called "America's Future: Two Visions, Two Books, Two Parties." Speaker Gingrich talked about his ideas which are expressed in his 2005 book Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America. Senator Schumer talked about his new book Positively American: Winning Back the Middle Class Majority One Family at a Time, in which he spells out his political vision for Democrats. After their presentations, the two men responded to audience members' questions. As chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Senator Charles Schumer oversaw his party's successful 2006 bid to reclaim control of the Senate. Former House Speaker (1995-1998) Newt Gingrich managed his party's reclaiming of House control in the 1994 elections.
