Senator Baucus, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, spoke about the competitiveness of the United States in the world economy. He talked about bills he would introduce that would address the U.S. competitiveness in education, energy, health, savings, research, taxes, and international trade. His highest priority was on education, with his bills providing free tuition for science and engineering students; raising starting teacher salaries; and creating partnerships with employers and continuing education centers to teach technological skills. Following his speech, the senator responded to questions and comments submitted by members of the audience. Mr. Salant moderated the event.
