Wangari Muta Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, gave the National Press Club luncheon address. Professor Maathai, on her first official visit to Washington, talked about deforestation as well as other social and political issues. She discussed the necessity for the Untied States to support the spirit of the Kyoto Protocol and attempt to lower greenhouse emissions. Following her remarks, Professor Maathai responded to questions and comments submitted by members of the audience. Professor Maathai is the author of The Green Belt Movement: Sharing the Approach and the Experience, published by Lantern Books.
