Delicious Dog Days of August

It's August in Washington, and we all know that means nothing's going on. Except at the Press Club, of course.

August in Washington also means Restaurant Week, and our Fourth Estate restaurant is an active participant in that. This year, in addition to the regular wonderful menu, members and visitors then and in September will be able to choose menu items that were served here to a group of prominent international chefs.

On Aug. 1, our executive chef Susan Delbert served lunch to possibly the most prestigious group of chefs in the world, a French organization, the Club des Chefs des Chefs, whose members are the chefs to heads of state all over the world. In the room were the chef to the Queen of England, Mike Flanagan, and Christian Garcia, Chef to His Highness, Prince Albert II of Monaco (a former Press Club luncheon speaker), who also serves as president of the Club des Chefs des Chefs. Christeta Comerford, the White House executive chef, is the United States representative and served as host to the visitors.

Now you and I can eat what they ate. That included a seasonal and local menu of:

• Summer salad of Arugula, Watermelon, Red Raspberries and Pistachio crusted Goat Cheese
• Virginia Bison with Blackberry Demi-glace, Scallion Potatoes and Tarragon Green beans, all locally sourced
• Silver Spring, Md.-produced artisanal Wild Blueberry Ice Cream with Local Blueberry-Grand Marnier Sauce
• Paired with Israeli wines

Mike Flanagan said this was "one of the best meals the chefs had eaten," during a Press Conference in the Holeman Lounge following lunch.
