This Week in Club History: How the Friedheim library came to be

July 9, 1990: Eric Friedheim, a Club member for 55 and editor-in-chief of Travel Agent magazine, gives the National Press Club library, “one of the greatest things you can endow,” a significant boost by setting up a $1 million living trust. From humble beginnings in 1908 with the purchase of a “newspaper file” of leading papers, to the opening in October 1984, after two years of planning, of a new up-to-date library, the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library is now the premier research, reference and educational venue for journalists, historians, academics and students in the nation’s capital. The endowment also made possible the creation of climate-controlled archives, which opened in January 2006.

This Week In National Press Club History is brought to you by the History & Heritage Committee, which preserves and revitalizes the Club’s 100-year history with displays, events, panel discussions and the oral history project.
