UN refugee official to explore humanitarian emergency in Libya, 9 am May 3

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations high commissioner for refugees, will discuss the humanitarian emergency generated by the conflict in Libya at a Newsmaker at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, in the Zenger Room.

With more than 500,000 people displaced by the fighting, Libya is one of the most pressing displacement situations in the world, according to Guterres. He also will discuss the displacement caused by the recent fighting in Ivory Coast.

Guterres became the 10th UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2005. A former Portuguese prime minister (1995 to 2002), Guterres was reelected last year by the General Assembly to a second five-year term. As high commissioner, Guterres heads one of the world’s foremost humanitarian organizations.
