Speakers next month: Girl Scout leader, labor secretary, safety board chairman

The head of the Girl Scouts and the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board are among the National Press Club luncheon speakers coming in June.

First up is the first Latina to serve as chief executive of Girl Scouts, Anna Maria Chavez, who will speak Monday, June 13, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the highest honor in Girl Scouting, the Gold Award. Girl scouts devote as much as two years in a community service project they must develop in order to earn the award.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m.

U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez will speak Wednesday, June 22. A potential Democratic vice-presidential candidate, Perez has overseen new rules on overtime pay and regulations to require financial advisors to propose appropriate investments for retirees.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a Q&A session ending at 2 p.m.

On Thursday, June 30, NTSB Chairman Christopher Hart will address recent train, plane and Metro accidents. Hart has served as NTSB chairman since April 2014. Before joining NTSB, Hart was a deputy director for air traffic safety oversight at the Federal Aviation Administration.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m.

Also, on Tuesday, June 21, Michael Middleton, the University of Missouri System interim president, will speak at a breakfast about moving the university forward amid a national conversation about diversity, equity and inclusion that was sparked by protests on the university's flagship campus in Columbia.

Middleton was appointed to head the University of Missouri System last year following racial tension and protests on University of Missouri campus that put it in the national spotlight.

Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. with remarks beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a Q&A session ending at 10 a.m.
