Put the boot in Campaign Boot Camp: Reporting in a hostile environment, 8:30 am June 23

The next installment of the Campaign Boot Camp series presented by the National Press Club Journalism Institute and the Club’s Professional Development Committee will focus on reporting in a potentially dangerous environment.

The program, which costs $25 for Club members and $50 for non-members, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on June 23. Tickets can be purchased online.

This year’s political party conventions could turn out to be sleepy affairs where the most dramatic thing that happens is some old actor starts talking to an empty chair. But protests have already turned violent on the campaign trail.

Shane Bell, managing director of Global Journalist Security, will discuss highlights of the programs his group has given to news organizations and nongovernmental nonprofits that send people to work in countries known for civil unrest. Bell, a former member of the Elite Commando Unit of the Australian Armed Forces, has been an adviser for the The New York Times and NHK of Japan.

He will discuss:

· Situational Awareness

· Civil Unrest

· Points of Communications & Teamwork

· Crowd Dynamics

· Riot Police Tactics

· Arrest Scenarios

· Riot Control Agents

· Tear Gas, Pepper Spray

· Personal Protective Equipment
