Program finalized for South African Night honoring Nelson Mandela legacy Nov. 26

A full two-hour program has been finalized for the South African Night on
the "Life, Legacy and Values of Nelson Mandela" from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on
Monday, Nov. 26, in the Ballroom that will start with a performance of a
traditional South African gumboot dance.

The Taratibu Youth Association from Mt. Rainier, Md., will set the scene for
the evening with its 20 members dancing and simultaneously singing as an a
cappella group a traditional South African work song, "Shosholoza," and a
spiritual song, "Hlonolofatsa."

The full program will feature the showing of video excerpts of Mandela¹s
1994 appearance as president of South Africa at the National Press Club, a
panel discussion on his legacy followed by a Q&A session, an exhibit of more
than 20 art works by both emerging and established South African artists and
a tasting of South African wines and dishes.

South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool will give introductory remarks,
followed by Edward Perkins, who was the first black U.S. ambassador to be
sent to South Africa from 1986 to 1989.

The panelists will include:

-- Charlene Smith, the author of the biography, "Mandela: A Celebration of a
Great Life," and her newly published book, "Mandela and America." Books
signed by Smith will be available for purchase.

-- Phillip Van Niekerk, who was a journalist in South Africa for two decades
covering the last years of apartheid and the transition to democracy. He
worked for the anti-apartheid Weekly Mail and became editor of the paper
from 1996 to 2001 after it was transformed into the Mail & Guardian.
