Newsmaker panels to examine education issues under Trump, new Congress, Nov. 14, 2-4 p.m.

Back-to-back Newsmaker events on Monday afternoon, Nov. 14, at the National Press Club will address how the election of Donald Trump and the Republicans' retention of Congress will affect education policy.

The two events, sponsored by the Club in conjunction with the Education Writers Association, will feature one-hour panel discussions followed by questions from news media, on K-12 and higher education from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., in the Club’s Bloomberg Room.

Confirmed speakers include: Lindsey Burke of the Heritage Foundation; Kevin Carey of New America; Terry Hartle of the American Council on Education; Alyson Klein of Education Week; Bethany Little of Education Counsel; and Gerard Robinson of the American Enterprise Institute.

Although Trump spent relatively little time on education in his presidential campaign, he sharply criticized the Common Core and high student debt, and proposed a plan to significantly expand school choice. For its part, Congress has a long to-do list in 2017, including the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.

Among questions that will be discussed:

How will Trump’s campaign rhetoric and proposals translate into a White House agenda? What will be his top education priorities, and how much political capital will his administration put behind them? What are the prospects for carrying out this agenda in Congress? Who will likely be the key education leaders in his administration?

As with all Newsmaker events, this forum is open to credentialed media and National Press Club members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.
