New data to be presented Thursday, Jan 14 shows abuse an issue for 1 in 5 women on campus

Lisa Maatz, vice president of government relations and Anne Hedgepeth, government relations manager at the American Association of University Women will address Trends in Campus Sexual Violence at a Thursday, Jan. 14 Newsmaker at the National Press Club.

Newly reported data required by the Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1990 indicate that the annual statistics collected by colleges and universities still do not tell the full story of sexual violence on campus. More than one in five college women report experiencing physical abuse, stalking, sexual abuse, or threats of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner.

At a Newsmakers news conference on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. in the Club’s Bloomberg Room, the two officials AAUW oficials will provide details of the group's analysis of recent federal data that shows what AAUW regards as disturbing trends related to sexual violence on campus. They will also outline legislative remedies and programs that they feel can improve the current climate on college campuses.

Additionally, the two speakers will discuss the accuracy of a report released by the U.S. Department of Education that shows 91 percent of college campuses reported zero incidents of rape in 2014.
