NAACP president plans 'Beyond Charlottesville' at Headliners Luncheon, Aug. 29

Interim NAACP President Derrick Johnson plans to discuss “Beyond Charlottesville: The Policies Undergirding Trump’s White Supremacist Agenda,” at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for Club members, who may purchase two tickets at this rate, and $39 for all other non-member tickets. Click here to purchase tickets.

Johnson, a longstanding leader of the NAACP, assumed the interim presidency in July and is tasked with leading the organization through a period of “re-envisioning and reinvigoration,” the organization said in its announcement of Johnson’s new post.

“The President’s failure to forcefully stand against racism and white supremacy represents the nadir of modern American politics,” Johnson said in an NAACP statement about the upcoming speech. “Yet even more frightening are the ways in which his administration has embraced policies designed to reinforce the privileges associated with white supremacy through imposing racist immigration policies; strategically eliminating and weakening civil rights enforcement and the protections against police brutality, all the while supporting partisan-led strategies to suppress the votes of communities of color.”

The NAACP believes these policies, if left unchecked, could do irreparable damage to civil rights and our democracy.

Johnson, a Mississippi native, is a veteran activist who has served as state president of the NAACP Mississippi State Conference. After Hurricane Katrina, Johnson founded One Voice Inc. to promote civic engagement among African-Americans.
