Media maven Rosenstiel shares political thriller “Shining City” March 2

Tom Rosenstiel, co-author of the revered classic "The Elements of Journalism," will share his first work of fiction, "Shining City," at a National Press Club book event on Thursday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Club's Conference Rooms.

Rosenstiel has been a longtime observer of Washington’s political scene, and his intimate knowledge of the system’s inner workings pay off in this fast-paced political thriller. Readers follow the story of two fixers with a proven track record - Peter Rena and his lively partner – as they are tasked with their biggest job yet: to vet the president’s Supreme Court nominee. The president’s pick is a polarizing figure, and as power players on both sides of the aisle mobilize for and against, a series of seemingly unrelated killings complicates Rena’s task.

Rosenstiel – author, journalist, researcher and media critic – is one of the nation’s most recognized thinkers on the future of media. Before joining the American Press Institute as its Executive Director in January 2013, he was founder and for 16 years director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism at the Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C., and co-founder and vice chair of the Committee of Concerned Journalists. He is the author of seven nonfiction books on media and politics, including the classic text "The Elements of Journalism," which has been translated into 30 languages and is used as a text in journalism schools worldwide, "Warp Speed," about the Clinton Impeachment, and "Strange Bedfellows," about the 1992 presidential campaign from inside the campaign and the media.

This event will feature an author discussion, audience question-and-answer session and book signing. Tickets are $5 for Press Club members and $10 for the public and can be purchased along with copies of the book online here or at the event. No outside books or memorabilia are permitted. Proceeds from this event benefit the non-profit affiliate of the Club, the National Press Club Journalism Institute, which offers innovative, practical training to journalists and communications professionals working in a rapidly-changing media environment.
