May 10 Newsmaker with Cardinal McCarrick and Prof. al-Hibri on religious minorities in Islamic nations

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, former Archbishop of Washington, and Azizah al-Hibri, Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Richmond, will address a National Press Club Newsmaker on Tuesday, May 10, focusing on religious minorities in predominantly Islamic nations.

The discussion will be held at 10 a.m. in the club’s Bloomberg Room. Like all Newsmakers, this event is open to credentialed media and NPC members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.

Hundreds of recent news stories have documented the destruction of Yazidi communities in Iraq, the persecution of Christians in Syria and in African nations, and the departure of the last Jews to reside in Yemen. Cardinal McCarrick and Professor al-Hibri will discuss the landmark Marrakesh Declaration designed to improve the lives of religious minorities in Muslim countries.

In January 2016, more than 250 Muslim religious leaders, heads of state and scholars reached an agreement on the Marrakesh Declaration, which spells out the rights of religious minorities in predominantly Islamic countries. The conference in Morocco included Muslims and non-Muslims, and was the first such meeting since the 622 C.E. Charter of Medina — the Muslim world’s first constitution, which detailed the rights of minorities in Islamic law.

The National Press Club is located on the 13th floor of the National Press Building at 529 14th St., NW, Washington D.C.
