President Donna Leinwand left Washington Thursday to cover aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake in Port au Prince, Haiti.

Leinwand, who reports on international disasters and domestic law enforcement for USA Today, has covered more than 20 hurricanes, including Katrina, as well as the Asian tsunami and the war in Iraq.

She will remain in Haiti indefinitely but promises to update Facebook and Twitter when she has access to communications. (Note from Wire editor: Please wish Donna safe travels through her Facebook page. Or send a note to Wire, and the Wire editor will pass it along.)

Leinwand will be unable to preside at the annual membership meeting on Friday.
