Lawmakers vs. Journalists: Which word nerds will prevail in the Press Club Spelling Bee on Oct. 21?

Lawmakers and Washington journalists will go head to head at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 for that most American of showdowns: A spelling bee.

Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Register here.

The Oct. 21 bee continues a tradition that began in 1913 when Congressional leaders and journalists met for the first Press Club Spelling Bee, billed as "The Best Speller in the United States” contest. After dozens of words, laughter and a little bit of embarrassment the evening ended with a Congressional victory.

Washington Post Editor Ira E. Bennet lost on the word "bdellium," forgetting the silent "b." Ohio congressman Frank B. Willis won the championship belt.

Watch a recap of the famous showdown here.

This year, the team of lawmakers includes Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., Rep. Brad Ashford, D-Neb., Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-NJ, and Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn.

The journalist team includes former Press Club president Angela Greiling Keane of Bloomberg News, David Kerley of ABC News, Rebecca Sinderbrand of The Washington Post, Rod Kuckro of E&E News and Yochi Dreazen of Foreign Policy.

Comedian Tim Young will kick off the program. The 90s hit cover band White Ford Bronco will rock the after party. A portion of the proceeds benefit the National Press Club Journalism Institute.
