How to get on TV and radio: Panel to offer tips Sept. 17

Television and radio appearances can broaden the reach of a print story and advance the careers of the reporters who wrote them. But if you're a reporter and your publication doesn't have a bevy of publicists to line up such appearances, it falls to you. But it is difficult to navigate such terrain.

You can learn how to overcome the difficulties on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Murrow Room. The National Press Club Journalism Institute's Professional Development Committee is offering a primer designed to explain how to get the attention of bookers as a subject-matter expert -- and stay on their list.

The committee is also working on a follow-up panel on how to shine once you're on the air.

The Sept. 17 session will feature a panel to offer practical advice about getting on the other side of the camera and the microphone. Among the panelists will Betsy Fischer Martin, of American University, formerly of NBC News, and Amy Shuster of MSNBC.

Barbara Cochran, Curtis B. Hurley chair for Public Affairs Journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism, and president of the NPCJI, will moderate.
