Hilarity expected at Books & Brunch discussion, Aug. 20

The NPC Books & Brunch group will discuss “Skios” by Michael Frayn on Saturday, Aug. 20 beginning at noon in the Fourth Estate Restaurant. Books & Brunch discussions are open to all NPC members and their guests—in fact members are encouraged to bring guests.

Based on the reviews, the group’s wild laughter as we discuss the book might disturb others enjoying brunch at the Fourth Estate.

As Rachel Cooke writing in the United Kingdom’s “Observer” puts it: “Truly does make you laugh out loud. I sniggered on the train and the bus; I sniggered in the kitchen, the bedroom and, on one occasion, in the shower. I wasn't reading the book in the shower, obviously. But I was thinking about it, and that was enough—‘Skios’ really is hilarious."

Another British reviewer, Cressida Connolly, in "The Spectator” wrote: "In the hands of someone less accomplished, the events in ‘Skios’ would be too improbable…As it is, you can sit back and let the book lap over you like the warm waters surrounding this Greek isle" that’s the book’s setting."

Closer to home, Michael Dirda of the Washington Post wrote: “…you should immediately head for the bookstore to buy a copy of Michel Fayen’s new book, Skios.’” He described it as a “romantic comedy constructed with the quick cutting and pace of a Marx Brothers movie.”

Looking ahead, on Saturday, Sept. 17, the Books & Brunch discussion will be about a non-fiction book, “When We Are No More” by Abby Smith Rumsey
