Get tips on freelance writing in business and finance Jan. 23

Fara Warner; editorial director of Aol Business, Technology and Entertainment Group; will join John Burgess, formerly an editor for The Washington Post and AARP Media, to headline a workshop on freelance writing in business and financial news Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m.

Organized by the National Press Club’s Freelance Committee, the workshop will explore topics including the volatile market for freelance business and financial journalism, the characteristics of an effective pitch to editors and how to negotiate reasonable freelance terms.

There will be plenty of time for questions and answers, and participants are invited to bring examples of successes and lessons learned in freelance writing.

At Aol, Warner oversees the editorial direction for brands including Moviefone, TechCrunch, Engadget, Daily Finance, Aol Autos, Aol Music, and Aol Travel. Before joining Aol, she was the editorial director for international special editions at Newsweek/DailyBeast.

From 2002 to 2011, she was a freelance writer contributing to The New York Times, Forbes, Fast Company and other national and international publications. She is the author of "The Power of the Purse: How Smart Companies Are Adapting to the World's Most Important Consumers - Women." Warner has taught journalism at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. She is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Burgess is a Washington journalist and author. He was at The Washington Post for 28 years, 12 of them on the business desk. He recently left AARP Media after two and a half years editing financial coverage, including working with freelance journalists. Burgess is the author of two books about ancient Cambodia, including the historical novel "A Woman of Angkor," due out in the United States in April 2013. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He began his career in journalism in Thailand in 1970 as an editor at an English-language newspaper.
