Experts discuss societal impact of gun-possession laws, 3 pm Oct. 9

George Lyon, one of the litigants whose suit led to the overthrow of the Washington, D.C., concealed-weapon ban, and Paul Helmke, former president and chief executive of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, will discuss whether "gun carry" laws benefit society at a National Press Club Newsmaker press conference at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.
Should U.S. citizens be allowed to carry weapons? All 50 states have laws on both the ownership of guns and the right to carry them. A U.S. district court ruled in July that Washington’s ban on the carrying of all weapons violated the Second Amendment. To comply with the ruling, the D.C. City Council has rewritten the law to require District residents to demonstrate a need to carry a concealed weapon.
Like all Newsmaker events, this news conference is open to credentialed press and Club members and is free of charge. No advance registration is required.
