Education Secretary John B. King explores preparing children for citizenship, Oct. 19 luncheon

As Americans prepare to elect officials at all levels of government, Education Secretary John B. King will speak about the importance of civic engagement as a cornerstone of democracy and the role of schools at an Oct. 19 National Press Club luncheon.

He will address the role schools play in preparing children to become adults who are active citizens.

King served as deputy secretary before being confirmed as secretary earlier this year. As secretary, and in former roles as education commissioner for New York state, president of the University of the State of New York, managing director of Uncommon Schools and a teacher, King’s focus has been on advancing equity for all students. He led the department’s work in President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m.

Tickets cost $24 for Club members, who may purchase two tickets at this rate, and $38 for all other non-member tickets. Tickets may be purchased online.
