Documentary chronicling Kenyan woman's struggles, triumphs to be screened Aug. 29

The inspiring story of social entrepreneur Anne Okelo, a Kenyan woman who changed the lives of a generations of girls and women in her home country, will be screened on Wednesday, Aug. 29.

“Well of Dreams: The Journey of Anne Okelo," will begin at 6 p.m. in the First Amendment Lounge and will be followed by a panel discussion with the film’s creators.

This will be the first full-length screening of the documentary. A seven minute excerpt from the film was included as part of an exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum earlier this summer. One of the filmmakers, Dan Frantz, was named a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts for his contribution to the film.

“Well of Dreams” tells the story of Anne Okelo, a woman who battled great odds to become the first girl in her village to graduate from high school. She went on to earn a scholarship at the University of Nairobi where she was one of just three girls in her graduating class. Okelo obtained her post-graduate degree at West Chester University in West Chester, PA. While in the United States, she began to share her desire to want to help her community in Kenya, prompting a church, a university and a small town to band together and help her take the next big step.
