Deadline for NPC journalism contest April 1

The National Press Club journalism contest offers a wide variety of competitions in categories ranging from analytical newsletter writing to humor writing to coverage of the aerospace and the airline industry. The contest, which has a deadline of April 1, even has a competition for the best young political writing.

Some details on those awards:


  • The Sandy Hume Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Journalism. It honors excellence and objectivity in political coverage by reporters 34 years old and younger. It is named in memory of Sandy Hume, the reporter for The Hill who broke the story of the aborted 1997 coup against House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The prize for first place is $750.

  • The Angele Gingras Humor Award is named for a longtime Press Club member who specialized in writing humorous stories for magazines and newspapers. The prize for first place is $750.

  • The Michael A. Dornheim Award recognizes excellence in coverage of aerospace, defense and the airline industry. This award is presented in celebration of the career of the late Michael Dornheim, a longtime reporter and editor at Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine. The first-place prize is $1,000.

  • The Newsletter Journalism Award recognizes excellence in analytical or interpretative writing for newsletters. The first-place prize is $750.

The journalism contest also includes awards for news photos, breaking news, online reporting, regional reporting on Washington, international coverage, consumer reporting reporting on the news industry, on problems facing the elderly and humor writing.
