Author Sebastian Junger to discuss new book on breakdown of American communities at June 16 Newsmaker

Sebastian Junger will discuss his new book, "Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging," at a National Press Club Newsmaker news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16, in the Bloomberg Room.

In his new book best-selling author Junger discusses the breakdown of our communities and explores what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty, belonging and the eternal human quest for meaning.

Junger says humans have an innate preference to live in small groups defined by clear purpose. According to the author that connection has been lost in American society today.

The divisiveness of the campaigns of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders has created huge new communities, according to Junger. The success of these candidates has grown from Americans’ feelings of loss and alienation, and the dying sense of American community will be the death of what America is, Junger says.

Junger is a journalist and author whose other books are "War" and "The Perfect Storm."
