Author to discuss Pakistan book April 14

Anatol Lieven, chair of international relations and terrorism studies at King's College in London and a former foreign correspondent in South Asia, will discuss his newly published book on Pakistan at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in the McClendon Room at an event organized by the International Correspondents Committee.

Pakistan: A Hard Country is described as "not a typical book about the region."

"[The book] is a discussion of Islamist extremism and the Taliban's rise in the area, but it is also a portrait of Pakistan itself, a look at the disparate, often conflicting, but surprisingly potent forces that hold this fractured country together," according to the book's publisher.

Lieven covered Pakistan for the Times of London in the 1980s and has spent long periods in the country in recent years, visiting all of its provinces and major cities. He also is the author of several books on the former Soviet Union, which he covered as a journalist.

Lieven's appearance at the National Press Club will coincide with his return from his latest visit to Pakistan, and he will offer fresh insights based on his observations.

Copies of his new book will be available for sale at the event, which is open to the public.
