Ag secretary plans report on listening tour at Headliners Luncheon, Tuesday, Dec. 12

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue plans to speak about his recent nationwide listening tour at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 12, in the Club’s Holeman Lounge.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for Club members (members may purchase two tickets at this rate) and $39 for all other non-member tickets. Secretary Perdue recently crisscrossed the country in a "Back to our Roots" tour to gather input from farmers and others in rural America before Congress writes a new farm bill. He plans to share some of those insights, as well as discuss his priorities for opening markets for American agricultural products, including the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Additionally, he plans to highlight the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s efforts to encourage and inspire the next generation of farmers and agricultural leaders through a partnership with the National Future Farmers of America.

Perdue became the 31st Secretary of Agriculture on April 25, but he got his start in agriculture years earlier growing up on his family’s dairy and crop farm in rural Georgia. After earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia and serving his country in the Air Force, Perdue became a small business owner focusing on agribusiness. He started his political career in the Georgia state Senate where he served 11 years before serving as governor of Georgia for two terms.
