Afghan Women's Rights Activist Discusses Memoir, 6 pm Nov. 2

Malalai Joya will discuss her new political memoir, "A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan who Dared to Raise her Voice," at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in the Conference Rooms on the 13th Floor.

Joya denounced her country's warlords at a constitutional assembly in Kabul in 2003 when she was 25 years old.

Two years later, she became the youngest person elected to Afghanistan's new Parliament, but in 2007 she was suspended following her persistent criticism of the warlords and drug barons. She described the action as a political conspiracy against her.

Please RSVP to Jan Du Plain, [email protected] or 202-486-7004. The event is sponsored by the International Correspondents' Committee.
