"The Outpost" reveals what really happened during the Taliban assault on Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan, detailing the history of the camp and the stories of the heroic —and ultimately doomed — soldiers who were at the mercy of often reckless commanders.

Just before 6 a.m. on Oct. 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops stationed there, at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outnumbered by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war’s deadliest battles for U.S. forces. Later, a Pentagon investigation concluded that there was no reason for Outpost Keating to have been there in the first place.
