Eleanor Herman reigns at her `Legacy of Kings' NPC Book Rap

National Press Club member Eleanor Herman chose to write about Alexander the Great at 16 because not much is known about him before he is 20, which gave her more freedom to write, she said at an Aug. 26 NPC Book Rap on her debut novel, Legacy of Kings.

The young Alexander is one of six main characters in the story – three males and three females -- all with intricate plots surrounding them, Herman said. It was her job as a writer to make these characters attractive and courageous as they go through various conflicts in the story line, she added.

Actor Kevin Costner to rap about new book at the Press Club, Oct. 23

Oscar–winning director and actor Kevin Costner, best known for his leading roles in movies including “Field of Dreams”, “The Untouchables” and “Dances With Wolves”, plans to speak about his new book The Explorers Guild: Volume One: A Passage to Shambhala on Friday, Oct. 23 at noon at the National Press Club's conference rooms.

Read book, then see show: NPC member's book gets TV deal; Rap on Aug. 26

Eleanor Herman, a member of the National Press Club for 15 years, will discuss her new book, “Legacy of Kings: Blood of Gods and Royals,” at a Club Book Rap Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Ballroom.

The Book Rap comes on the heels of news that Simon Helberg, who plays Howard Wolowitz on “The Big Bang Theory,” and his wife, writer-director-actor Jocelyn Towne, have obtained exclusive rights to produce a TV show based on Herman’s book on Warner Brothers Television. The television company made the announcement.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan, one of President Barack Obama’s original cabinet members, will discuss what’s ahead in education policy at a National Press Club luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Duncan’s speech will come as Congress works to complete the reauthorization of the legislation best known as “No Child Left Behind” - the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). ESEA was due to be reauthorized in 2007, but Congress has been unable to act on the issue so far.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will deliver a major speech entitled “Lessons from the New South” at a National Press Club luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Haley is the youngest governor in the country and the first female and first minority governor in South Carolina history. Last year she was re-elected by the largest margin of victory for a South Carolina gubernatorial candidate in 24 years.
