Madrid, Cartegena, Egypt-Jordan Start 2010 NPC Trips

The National Press Club is sponsoring trips to Madrid, Colombia and Egypt-Jordan early next year, and there is still time to sign up for one or more of them.

Madrid is the destination over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend -- Jan. 13-18. The price is $1,795, all inclusive.

Feb. 12-16, travel to Cartegena, Colombia, for $1795, including air, hotels and more.

Egypt and Jordan are the destinations for a March 10-24 trip, at a cost of $5,485, including everything except transportation to and from New York's JFK.

Hallowscreen Attracts "Stars"

Scarlett O'Hara, Dr. Strangelove, Groucho Marx, Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood luminaries descended on the Club Oct. 30 for the Hallowscreen. Dr. Strangelove (Andrew Schneider, chairman of the Book & Author Committee) took home first place for best costume.

Indie-rock band Deleted Scenes and DJ Matt Spangler provided spook-tacular musical entertainment, and Alisa Parenti, an award-winning anchor for Marketwatch Radio Network, emceed.

Nov. 2, 1961: Former President and NPC member Harry Truman appears at the Club on the 13th anniversary of his surprise election victory over Thomas E. Dewey, and describes himself as “retired farmer, Independence, Missouri.”

Nov. 4, 1958: The National Press Club luncheon menu introduces Hot Roast Beef sandwiches for $1.25 and a 10-ounce sirloin with two vegetables and beer for $2.50.

Nov. 5, 1971: Indira Gandhi, India’s prime minister since 1966, discusses growing tensions with Pakistan, which lead to war several weeks after her appearance at the National Press Club.
