6:30 PM  Writing Tools (NPC Professional Development)
Description: Poynter Institute's Writing Tools:
50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer

Need to give your writing a boost? Join the Eric Friedheim Library's Professional Development Committee and the Poynter Institute for Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer -- a practical workshop with a little piano, a little singing, and maybe even a little dance.
Generated by Poynter's top instructor Roy Peter Clark, the 50 tools take the writer from the sub-atomic to the metaphysical levels of the craft. Learn how to master the nuts and bolts, how to make meaning and achieve clarity, how to develop the best blueprints for reports and stories, and how to acquire the most useful habits that make excellence a routine.
Clark has taught writing at the Poynter Institute for almost three decades and is considered one of the most influential writing coaches in American journalism. His best advice is now contained in his book, Writing Tools. In a blurb for the book, Sister Helen Prejean writes, "Would that I had had Clark's manual when I wrote my first book, Dead Man Walking." And humorist Dave Barry argues that "Roy Peter Clark knows more about writing than anybody I know who is not currently dead." Clark also plays a mean rock 'n' roll piano, and may wind up playing "Roll Over Beethoven," even as he teaches "Move Over Strunk & White."

This lively seminar kicks off with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. in the NPC Murrow Room, followed by the class at 7 p.m.

Space is limited, so reserve soon by calling (202) 662-7501.

6:30 PM  Kimberly Dozier (NPC Professional Development)
Description: FIGHTING TO REPORT AND SURVIVE IN IRAQ:
CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT KIMBERLY DOZIER SHARES HER REMARKABLE JOURNEY FROM ROADSIDE BOMB TO RECOVERY

Covering the Middle East as a foreign correspondent for CBS News, Kimberly Dozier earned a reputation for being on top of the story. But on Memorial Day 2006, Dozier became the story as a car bomb took the lives of her crew, a U.S. Army captain and Iraqi interpreter, and left her in a pool of blood on the street, fighting for her life. Her new book, Breathing the Fire, reconstructs her path from bombing to recovery, from the instant after she was critically injured on the battlefield, to the fight to keep her alive.

Dozier is a veteran journalist of print, radio and television news---on the local, national, and international level. In April 2008, Dozier won a Peabody Award for her CBS Sunday Morning piece about two women veterans who lost limbs in Iraq.

Marvin Kalb will act as host for the discussion, sponsored by the National Press Club's Eric Friedheim Library and the Professional Development Committee.

Call (202) 662-7501 to reserve.
