NPC Luncheon

Anna Maria Chávez, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of the USA, will speak at a National Press Club Luncheon, May 30. Ms. Chávez will be in the nation’s capital to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting.

The Girl Scouts of the USA was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia in 1912. After she met the founder of the Boy Scouts, Gordon Low was determined to develop a movement that would teach girls self-reliance, resourcefulness and help prepare them for a role beyond that of traditional homemaking. A century later, the Girl Scouts of the USA is the largest organization for girls in the world, with a membership of more than 3.2 million. Nearly 60 million living women in the United States today are Girl Scout alumnae.

Chávez recently launched a new effort, ToGetHerThere, to promote equal representation of women in leadership positions in all sectors and levels of society — within one generation. In June, thousands of girls from all over the country will “Rock the Mall,” using the power of song and dance to celebrate the centennial, along with many now-famous women who grew up as Girl Scouts.

The Press Club luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. Remarks will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session, ending at 2 p.m. Advance reservations should be made through (202) 662-7501 or [email protected]. The cost of luncheon admission is $19 for National Press Club members, $30 for their guests, and $37 for the general public. Tickets must be purchased at time of reservation.
