About the Farm Foundation Forum: Food, agricultural and rural policy is changing. The increasing integration of the world agricultural economy presents challenges in trade, food safety, animal health and food security. More citizens and interest groups are actively working to influence agricultural, food and rural policy issues.

Farm Foundation organizes these public forums to engage all stakeholders in informed dialogue on food, agricultural and rural policies. Meeting participants examine current policies, explore and analyze alternative policy proposals, and give voice to new proposals. Speakers provide brief topic summaries, with the majority of time devoted to discussion.

Farm Foundation launched this series in February 2006 as the Farm Bill Forums, focusing on issues in the next farm bill. Stakeholders have made it clear they value the opportunity to discuss current and evolving issues. We are continuing the series as Farm Foundation Forums to issues beyond those in the current legislation.

Who should participate: People with an interest in agricultural, food and rural policy, including members of Congress, congressional staff, executive branch officials, industry representatives, NGO representatives and members of the media.

Farm Foundation is a non-profit which works as a catalyst, bringing together producers, industry, interest groups, government and academics to address economic and public policy issues facing agriculture, the food system and the people of rural America. Farm Foundation has a 75-year history of objectivity. It does not lobby or advocate positions.

Logistics: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, National Press Club, 529 14th Street NW, Washington D.C. Coffee available at 8:30 a.m.

Michael Phelps
Time: 2:00 PM
Event Type: NPC Newsmaker
Sponsored by: Newsmakers Committee
Event Location: Lisagor Room
Details:
Michael Phelps, CEO of the Washington-Baltimore Examiner Newspaper Group, Publisher and President of The Washington Examiner, will discuss "Newspapers should be free, just like all other news media"

Phelps will discuss The Examiner Newspaper Group and how it took action to revive newspaper readership and advertising by focusing on delivering local news in a format and with content convenient and compelling to readers, and designed to help advertisers target their customers. Part of that format meant publishing a free paper that could be delivered to homes and in single copy patterns to compete with free content on the Web, and to attract younger readers that advertisers covet -- and who have never paid for news: Web, television or radio.

The Washington Examiner, the second largest circulation of daily newspapers in the Washington, D.C. region, celebrates its three-year anniversary in March 2008 and The Baltimore Examiner celebrates its two-year anniversary April 2008.

ABOUT MICHAEL PHELPS: Michael Phelps launched The Baltimore Examiner, the first of Philip F. Anschutz's Clarity Media newspapers started from scratch, on April 5, 2006. Since November 2006, he has served as chief executive officer of The Washington-Baltimore Examiner Newspaper Group and publisher and president of The Washington Examiner. _____________________________________________ CONTACTS: National Press Club: Jamie Loftus (202) 777-3709, jloftus@dcigroup.com
