Author Raps on Mandela in Authorized Biography

The life of Nelson Mandela is one of the most extraordinary epics of our time. An almost forgotten prisoner 20 years ago and apparently doomed to a helpless existence of apartheid, he not only survived but almost single-handedly saved South Africa from potential chaos. Anthony Sampson, in his "Mandela: The Authorized Biography", penetrates Mandela’s dazzling myth to show the man himself. Sampson will preside at a book and author rap on Thurs., Sept. 16. The session begins at 6:30 p.m. with discussion and Q&A. A book signing will follow. The rap is free, and books will be provided for sale. Reserve at 662-7501.

The audience will have a role in the form of a discussion following the performance of three short plays by Rachel Bail at the Club on Fri., Sept. 17, 7 p.m. The actors, director Keith Donaldson and the playwright will answer questions about the plays themselves, her technique and the theater. This evening of member-written playlets is free, and there will be a cash bar. Reserve at 662-7501.

Saturn's Trudell "Driven"

A lady whose drive took her to the top in the auto industry, Cynthia Trudell, CEO of Saturn Corp., told a fascinated NPC luncheon audience Aug. 18 how it was done. You have to know yourself, know what you want and have a strategic plan to get there, she said. The first female CEO in the auto industry, Ms. Trudell also touted the GM-backed Saturn as "all our advertising says it is." Her goal, she said, is to make sure the customer has a "great experience" with Saturn. Key ingredient in Saturn's success--and her own--is fostering trust and loyalty among employees and partnering with related organizations, such as the UAW. The former engineering manager said young women should lay emphasis on math and science. She noted that 40 percent of key managers at Saturn are women, and that women hold a 60-40 lead among customers.

"Gotta Move the Money," Ice Cream Maker Says

Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's ice cream company, wearing his other hat as spokesman for Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, came to the Club Aug. 19 to advocate a change in federal budget priorities. His message, accompanied by visual and auditory aids including a rousing rap chorus by Cohen himself, was simple: "We gotta move the money." Cohen said his organization advocates a shift from military spending to spending on education and child health care. With the end of the Cold War, Cohen said, economic warfare has replaced military warfare, and the battles of this war are being waged in the classroom. We must prepare our children to compete in society, he said. The annual Pentagon budget is $280 billion, compared with $30 billion for education, $30 billion for child health care and $3 billion for the Head Start program. Russia’s military budget is $60 billion a year.

Reserve your hook, line and sinker with Pat Nelson at the NPC front desk, or call 662-7539.

Sept. Internet Classes

Starting the day after Labor Day, Tues., Sept. 7, and continuing through Fri., Sept. 10, the NPC Library will conduct daily Internet classes. Sessions will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at a cost of $40 per day. Colleagues who are not members and would like to avail themselves of these courses also will pay $55 per session. The courses are:

  • Tues.: Basic Browser provides a conceptual framework for using the Internet and explores the workings of Internet browsers. This class is primarily hands-on; students quickly begin surfing on their own.
  • Wed.: Basic E-mail explores its use, including sending and receiving, subscribing to Listservs and the hazards of SPAM.
  • Thurs.: Basic Searching explores the concept of Boolean searching and examines a variety of search engines. Students will actually formulate their own search questions and get appropriate results.
  • Fri.: Basic Downloading completes the class cycle by finding and downloading documents, graphics and software. Students will download and install both self-extracting software and compressed (or zipped) items.

These classes, which are taught in the Bloomberg Center of the Library, are completely "hands-on" for all students. Because of this, class sizes are limited and reservations--at 662-7523--are necessary. The Library plans to repeat this education cycle in October and December.

"DARKLY HANDSOME" RALPH DE TOLEDANO (right) celebrated his 83rd birthday in the Reliable Source Sat., Aug. 14, surrounded by long-time friends and colleagues. Ross Mark (left) and other pals shamelessly roasted de Toledano. The Reliable Source is available to NPC members and their guests to celebrate birthdays and other special events. For details call Reliable Source Manager Mesfin Mekonen at 662-7521.

News and Notes

"News & Notes" is an idea for a new page on the NPC web site designed to announce accomplishments and noteworthy tidbits about fellow members. If you have stories or information about your own recent achievements (e.g. a book being published, receiving an award or recognition, a birth in the family, travel experiences), the web people would like to hear about it. Of course the Record already publishes "Books by Members" and "Personals", which will continue. Members having "News & Notes" to share should contact Suzannah Rubens in the Membership Office at 662-7506 or E-mail srubens@npcpress.org.
